2003-2004 Season: Season end reviews
Sunday 05.30.2004
alice ttlg || 08:43 PM
Since there's nothing on TV now that it's summer, I'll be doing a season end review of one show each day. Then I'll start on the upcoming fall shows and that should bring us up to September.
2003-2004 Season: Another Return
Sunday 01.18.2004
MattM || 08:37 AM
Well after a very hectic last few months my schedule finally returns to normal and my reviews should resume. Assuming theres anyone left paying attention. Not that there was alot of you to begin with. I am still about a month behind in my T.V. viewing but hope to slowly get caught up over the next month or two. So here is one giant entry to bring things up to speed.
New Shows: This continues to be one of the strongest seasons I have ever seen. Even with the shocking cancellation of Jake 2.0 this season is dominating and gives me great hope for the next few years. Joan of Arcadia, Las Vegas, Nip/Tuck, Playmakers, among many others have made this a breakout year for television. Joan of Arcadia is the leader in this but it is a tight race. What makes Joan work so well is that its orginal. It also takes the teen angst drama to another place as well not forgetting the adult story lines. The writting makes it work but the cast is just off the charts. It might have the single strongest cast of any show on TV bar none. Las Vegas is also right there with it being at times funny and sad all the things that make a drama work. It like Joan is orginal in many senses and is propelled by a great cast. Josh Duhahmel along with Amber Tamblyn are this years breakout stars. Still the most suprising development is the sitcom. A dying art for many years now this year has had three solid maybe not or ever great shows. Hope and Faith finally found a role for Kelly Ripa but it might be dragged down by Will and Graceitis (too many guest stars). I'm With Her has shown real smarts at times and has the most potential of any thing. Two and a half men has been the most consistent of the bunch. If you aren't watching any of these shows you need to be because you are missing out on the best new season to come along in years. The most amazing thing is that as I wrap this paragraph up I haven't even mentioned Navy NCIS another show that would shine in an ordinary year but is so buried in good shows that it looks weak compared to the rest.
Returning Shows: Thank god for the new shows other wise this year would be bleak. Alias, Smallville and Angel are in there primes granted but after that the fall off is huge. 24 has bounced back very nicely from a horrendous year. Amazing what a better plot line and less couger-Kim drama does for a show. That being said Friends, ER, Third Watch, and West Wing continue to spiral downward uncontrollably. The last two are unwatchable now and the first two are boardering on that. I am so sick of Friends now I am glad its over. I am only watching because I have watched it this long but the jokes are the same the cast is going through the motions and its plot is predictable and dumb. Ditto for ER. I hate John Wells and the fact that he has ruined three very good shows in West Wing, Third Watch and ER. Adding to the disappointment is the fall off of other formely good shows in Charmed and Boomtown. Then adding even more to it is the shows I expected to get better but haven't such as CSI:Miami and Enterprise. Both shows had chances to improve greatly and failed miserably. As good as the new shows have been the returning vets outside of Alias, Smallville, Angel, Without a Trace, and CSI have all fallen off or are in decline.
Other News: Congrats to my sister on calling the CSI:Manahattan. Still its disappointing that they showed such unorginality by going to New York. What makes this series great is that it WASNT in New York (as apparently according to the TV world there is only one city in the US). What a horrible choice this is and I think the series will be even worse then CSI:Miami. Also what is with UPN lately. It can only tolerate Enterprise? Enterprise stinks right now. It isn't drawing ratings and yet despite this a better show with better ratings gets cancelled. Ok who hired the FOX exec at UPN? Another quesition is who exactly does David Kelly have pictures of? Boston Public is still on the freaking air. Practice is going to get another season!!!! AND AND he's getting a new show. Yet we can't keep firefly, Jake 2.0, Dark Angel, etc etc etc on but we can keep guys like Dick Wolf, John Wells and David Kelly employed?? Joss Whedon can't buy time on a regular network and David Kelly can't get off the regular network. Lastly I want to send out props to the gutless spinless worthless weenies at CBS for not letting Moveon.org show its anti-Bush ad during the superbowl. An ad that is worth checking out at moveon.org. and brings a powerful point home but god help us we can't crititize the worst president ever that would be unpatriotic. Still CBS as spinless doesn't surprise me since if you look at their horrible football coverage which at best can be described as bland and their total lack of orginality in shows (look they have one sucess in a procedurial drama (CSI) and one sucess in a reality show (Survivor) that does NOT repeat that DOES NOT DOES NOT DOES NOT mean we want to watch CSI and Survivor every single day of the week). Still I hope they manage to get that ad on somewhere during his state of the union. Its about time we all really took a hard look at what Bush is doing to this country.
10-8, 2003-2004 Season, Arrested Development, Happy Family, Hope & Faith, Joan of Arcadia, Karen Sisco: An Update
Tuesday 09.09.2003
MattM || 11:55 AM
Ok I guess its not only a women's but a TV reviewers right to change there mind as well. I admit it I ripped Joan of Arcadia, Hope and Faith, Two and a Half Men, and Arrested Development. So why am I giving them a chance now? Joan I am giving a shot to because I am always bitching about orginality on TV and the copycat syndrome and Joan is anything but that so I feel a little obligated due to good press to at least give it a shot. Hope and Faith with Kelly Ripa *shiver*. I can't believe this show is getting good press but then again Faith Ford is very good and maybe she can make it work with the limited Kelly Ripa but I doubt it. Two and a Half Men might just work because Cryer is very good in certain roles and ditto for Charlie Sheen. Still the track record suggests otherwise but its getting good write ups so I will give it a spin. I also downgraded 10-8, Brotherhood of Poland NH, and Happy Family because each of these look very very weak. I am also going to upgrade Miss Match to an orange and give it a shot. Karen Sisco despite its horrible looking previews is getting great press and like wise has earned a bump to light green.
2003-2004 Season, Enterprise, Happy Family, Jake 2.0: Premieres - Sept 7th to Sept 13th
Saturday 09.06.2003
MattM || 10:13 AM
Well the fall season officially gets in full swing this week and with shows better defined here are my thoughts on the premires upcoming:
Whoopi - This might be the early front runner for worst show of the year. It seems entirely based on what shocking thing she can say. Ok All in the Family was great but it was not great because of the shocking things Archie Bunker would say. It was great because it had depth and dealt with issues that no other show would go near. Also Whoopi is not Red Foxx. This show looks just utterly the pits and one I will definatly be skipping.
Happy Family - Another show that will undoubtly bomb but unlike Whoopi I will give it a watch. The reason being John Larroquette. However reading in different places both Christine Baranski and him are being deemphasized. As if the plot wasn't already thin enough you are going away from your established people?? Well, I hope they have a back up plan for this hour in place.
Enterprise - This show is hanging by a thread. They could reestablish themselves this year and make a huge comeback......but I doubt it. Star Trek as a franchise needs new blood and new direction. To boldy go where Bermen would never go before. I will give it a watch because the final two episodes had something in them that makes me hold out hope but barring a miracle I am about to do something I never dreamed possible stop watching a Trek series. Where have my icons of my youth gone Star Trek and Star Wars are both firmly in the jumped shark waters.
Jake 2.0 - A.K.A. The Six Million Dollar Man. Hey whens Lee Majors or Lindsey Wagner going to do a cameo? They should have cast them both on this show in my opinion. The previews do look interesting though but somehow I doubt UPN will pull it off. Then again I thought the same thing about Haunted and they did pull it off........only to cancel it.
Steve Harvey's Big Time - A variety show for Stupid Human Tricks. Hmmmmm uh no. The sad thing is Harvey has real acting and comedic talent. He needs something better then this. Why he turned down a spin off from My Wife and Kids is beyond me thats the kind of thing he could make work.
What I Like About You - Amanda Bynes give her due has some talent and god knows I can't pry my daughter away from Nick when her other show is on but this show is remaking myself and put in an impossible time slot. Even if the show was great I doubt it would make it. Possibly only Bynes appeal to the tween set can save it.
Run of the House - Do a double take if you must but yes thats really Joey er Joseph Lawerence of the Blossum show. As parents flee to get away from four bratty siblings and ahhh hell this show just sucks but hey at least its probably better then Whoopi......but not by much.
Reba - A show that I am sure is better then it looks and Reba has some real talent but I just never got into this show or understood it always looked like a slightly better version of the Jeff Foxworthy show. Which isn't saying much better then awful is what? bad? mediocre?
Grounded For Life - Another show I just really really really really don't get. This show has a following and I have no idea why. It died on FOX finally and then got a second chance on WB. Yet Firefly and et al can't buy a second chance.
All About the Andersons - Has some real talent on it. John Amos was great on the West Wing and will be missed. Anthony Anderson has comedic talent. Yet this show just sounds so run of the mill to me and no one is giving it much run so not much point in watching it. I really don't understand why Amos is doing this he's already done this role before.
[sharon adds] I noticed one of the writer producers of All about Andersons is doing another show this fall too. HE was also responsible for bring us Caroline in the City UGH UGH and a few other not at all funny comedies. He's awful and wonder why he keeps getting all these opportunities when there are so many other muchmore talented people out there in tinsel town? Oh well he must be screwing all the right people eh? (September 20, 2003 03:31 PM)
[MattM adds] I'm guessing your talking about Marco Pennette whos credits are a mixture of good and bad mostly bad. Also the other executive producer has just as spotty a track record but hey its UPN what exactly do you expect? A-List producers don't do shows on UPN unless the show is so off topic that networks won't touch it (I.E. Buffy, Smallville, Jake 2.0). These getting a show on UPN is because they can't get a show any where else. (September 21, 2003 11:27 AM)
2003-2004 Season: Final Thoughts
Thursday 05.15.2003
MattM || 11:46 PM
Well all the schedules are in. At the end of last year I said dark days were ahead for the following season and I was never more right. I thought though at the time that it would be a one year flux thing but instead its turned into a trend. This years crop of new shows is hands down the worst I have ever seen. For the first time ever there is not one single show that I am just dying to see. Worse then that is the fact overall on TV there is only two shows I consider MUST WATCH. That is Alias and Boomtown. The once great shows of Buffy is gone and West Wing without Sorkin has a ton of quesitions surrounding it. Smallville and Angel could move up or down there is just no telling. I look at my schedule and I have total of 34 viewing hours (always an inflated number at the beginning of a new season) but that number could drop to 13 if patterns and what i expect from new shows happens. That is just stupid. I don't know whats going with TV lately if its just I am no longer a targeted audience or the sickening attack of stupid TV aka "Reality" shows. I really hope 2004-2005 is rebound year but this year I will be spending a lot of time reading books and watching sporting events that no human should watch such as a Texas Rangers game. In closing I want to say that I don't begrudge all Reality shows. American Idol, Juniors, Star Search, Nashville Stars are talents shows and I think its good thing (not that I am interested in watching them) to have those shows because they can give exposure to people who may not otherwise get it. Still its the other shows that I have problem with because so many of them degrade women, marriage, or people's vulnerabilities. Joe Millionaire, Bachelor, Survivor, et al or a blight on our TV screens and take away slots of quality thought provoking TV. The trend now seems to be in America that we don't want to think we just want to veg out yes TV should be about that but it should also be able to make you think and teach while making us laugh but all reality shows do is pander to the lowest common demoninator. So I close the this entry with a little words of wisdom from Brad Paisley from his song Celebrity:
"Someday I am going to be Famous. Do I have talent? Well, no. These days you don't really need it. Thanks to Reality shows. Can't wait to date a super model. Can't wait to sue my dad. Can't wait to wreak my Ferrari. On the way to Rehab. .......... So Lets hitch up the Wagons and head out west. To the land of fun in the sun. We will all be Real world bachelors. Jackass millionaires. Hey Hey Hollywood here we come"
[MattM adds] On second thought I want to give Kudos to FOX for topping the untoppable. I thought no cancellation could top Dark Angel but they sunk to a whole new level by cancelling John Doe. (May 16, 2003 03:12 AM)
2003-2004 Season, 24, Bernie Mac, Boston Public, Dark Angel, Fastlane, Firefly, John Doe, Skin, Stan Hooper, Tru Calling: FOX
Thursday 05.15.2003
MattM || 11:26 PM
Click below to see my thoughts on the worst network on TV the network that in the last 2 years has cancelled more good TV then all networks combined.
RIP
Fastlane
Dark Angel
Girls Club
John Doe
Firefly
and thats just a small taste of the blood bath they have given us the last couple of years. I strongly suspect that Tru Calling no matter how good or bad is won't make it out of its first season or won't be back for a second at best. So click away !!
...there be spoilers below...
Monday
How do you when a FOX exec is lying? When his lips move. A few years back after the horrid Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire (aka I am a little Gold Digging Whore Show), FOX swore for all the world to see that they would clean up their act and become a better network for quality shows. YEA RIGHT. When Joe Millionaire was being pushed as a campy poke fun at the reality shows that was a one time thing you just knew that was a lie and big shock it was. So we get more Gold Digging Whores on Monday at 7 gee just what we need for all the little kids to see a fine example of "adults" composing their lives with diginity. FOX's new motto "Don't a believe a word we say!!" Skin follows Joe Millionaire (from whores to sluts?) which has some really solid actors and some good producers and writers on it. Still I put it at a yellow if it goes the way I think they are trying to go it could be a real campy funny good show (whats that sound its FOX getting ready to cancel oh no say the exec the horror of it all a good show on FOX??? NOOOOOOO). Still it could also be horrible to and I don't think theres middle ground here its either going to be a light green or a huge flaming red.Tuesday
The only show on Tuesday is the Would you like cheese with that Whine Kim? errrrr 24. I doubt I will stick around to watch this for toooo long because it was so bad this season and unless they shake things up considerably I don't see how they can make a good series out of this. It worked for one year but thats all it has worked for.Wednesday
This is sitcom night for FOX with a jumped the shark That 70s Show, a revamped after the show creator and head of the show left FOX but I still won't watch Bernie Mac, and an ok but not that interesting skit variety show Cedric The Entertainer. The new sitcom for the night is Norm MacDonald's A Minute With Stan Hooper which despite its positive vibe from test audiences looks awful. I will give it one watch and probably thats it but Norm MacDonald has never done a good sitcom.Thursday
In the realm of things that don't make sense wouldn't it have been a novel idea to put John Doe after Tru Calling??? It would have been a great alternative to all the other shows as a sci-Fi night oh wait that would require something FOX execs don't have a brain!!! Someone please send them off to see the Wizard they don't have brains, heart, or courage. Tru Calling I think might be good but its premise sounds shakey at best. Eliza Dusku is a first rate actress and I think she could pull this off still it seems to be a mutant blend of what my sister said: Ground Hog Day meets Early Edition with a little X-Files and Sixth Sense (I hear dead people not I see them) mixed in. It is followed by 90210 2003 errrrr The O.C.. Hey I got a joke what do you get when the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and 90210 have a baby? You get this garbage show called The O.C.Friday
The night leads off with Wanda in Charge a critical darling that will probably be cancelled again (see the no good shows on our network FOX policy). This is followed by Luis about Donut shop operater in Spainish Harlem....um ok then. This should comply perfectly with FOX's no good shows on our network policy. It is then followed by a formely good show now just total garbage as it has entered David Kelly's wasteland as all his shows do after one or two seasons (expecation to The Practice). Boston Public is for some reason still sticking around.Sunday
More sitcoms here. Malcolm In the Middle and its twin brother Oliver Beene are on here. Malcolm is a very good show or at least it was the few times I watched it but I just never could get into it. Simpsons and King of the Hill are also here but and are average fair. The two new shows are The Ortegas (isn't that a Taco company? How much did they pay for that title!!). Which is a hispanic family doing a british TV show yep another in complainance show. Also here is Arrested Development which also looks equally bad.[BARBARA MARTINEZ adds] SIGN THE PETITION MAYBE THE IDIOTS AT FOX MIGHT GET IT RIGHT AFTER SEEING ALL THE SIGNATURES http://www.petitiononline.com/Nikketti/petition-sign.html? (June 10, 2003 12:17 AM)
[gigohead adds] I actually liked A Minute with Stan Hooper. It started out kind of slow but it started to build and got even better and nuttier. Sorry you didn't give a chance. (May 25, 2004 02:31 PM)
2003-2004 Season: And last out the gate is Fox!
Thursday 05.15.2003
alice ttlg || 05:08 PM
Here comes Fox, they have announced the schedule but don't have it up on their website yet, so you can read the press release with full show descriptions and pictures at theFutonCritic.com.
But most importantly, THE BASTARDS KILLED JOHN DOE!!!!! Arrgghhhhh!
...there be spoilers below...
Sunday
Nothing to see here, people, move on, nothing but sitcoms....Monday
Joe Millionaire, I figure those stupid women get what they deserve.Tuesday
American Junior, I don't watch reality shows! Yeesh. 24 at 8pm, that's it. I hope they do it better the third time around.Wednesday
And still nothing to see here, folks, move on, just more sitcoms (how many sitcoms will be on this coming season???)Thursday
Here we have Eliza Dushku's show, Tru Calling, a cross between The X-Files, Groundhog Day and Early Edition with beautiful girl instead of guys. If it wasn't for Eliza, I'd never give it a look, but if they don't smooth off her rough edges too much and make her too much of a "hero", then it could work, Eliza's a good actor and could pull this off, if Fox will just give the show a chance to grow. The O.C., another mish-mash show, crossing Fresh Prince of Bel-Air with Beverly Hills 90210, cross that one off, been there, done that, wasn't that good the first time.Friday
Here we pause for a moment of silence for John Doe. If it wasn't for Boomtown, I'd be tempted to boycott all TV on Fridays in protest of Fox cancelling a really good show. And what do they give us in return??? Two sitcoms and Boston Public! Boston Public, they cancelled John Doe and put Boston Public here! Sheesh. I shall boycott Fox on Fridays in protest, not only did they cancel John Doe, they gave us trash in its place.Saturday
Here we don't even have bad sitcoms, just more reality shows! We don't need no steekin' reality shows...So that's three possible shows to watch on Fox, Skin on Monday, 24 on Tuesday (but if I see Kim whining her way thru the season again, I'm dropping it like a hot potato) and Tru Calling on Thursday. The other networks aren't that much better, all in all, it's a pretty bad turnout this year, usually there's a bunch of shows I'm dying to see come fall but this year, there's only two shows that hold any promise of being more than mediocre and that's Brotherhood of Poland, New Hampshire and Tru Calling. And some of the best shows ended or got cancelled this year so there's not much left, only Alias, Angel, Boomtown and Smallville that I'm really excited to see in the fall, Buffy's gone, John Doe's gone, NYPD Blue's been awful with the Andy/Connie/baby thing, Third Watch completely lost the idea of an ensemble show, the rest were uneven, some great eps stuck in between some mediocre to bad eps. I guess I'll be reading a lot of books this fall, maybe I'll start a Ramblings from the Papyrus blog and do bunches of book reviews.
2003-2004 Season, Enterprise, Jake 2.0: UPN
Thursday 05.15.2003
MattM || 04:00 PM
Click Below for my thoughts on the new UPN line up:
...there be spoilers below...
Monday
Monday consists of three 4 sitcoms The Parkers, Opposite Sex, Girlfriends, and Half & Half The new one is Opposite Sex which I think will probably be fairly good. Eve was really good on Third Watch (wish she could have stuck around for that show would have helped it a lot) and probably will be one of UPNs stronger shows. That being said it goes on my unwatch list because frankly I am too old and the wrong color for it. I really do give a strong tip of the hat to UPN for letting Minority based shows have a real chance and a home when network TV has long long long ignored them.Tuesday
More sitcoms More Sitcoms. This night consists of one returning (One on One) and three new shows (All of Us, Rock Me Baby, and The Mullets). One on One is much like the shows from Monday and I have not watched it before. All of Us is the show from Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith about thier life. I think it probably has potential but it just doesn't grab me. Rock Me Baby and the Mullets look bad beyond all descripation. Any show about people with Mullets has no business on the air and Rock Me baby is about shock jock. I don't watch Howard Stern and never will and I definatly don't want to see a show about someone like him. Notably about the Mullets though is that it also stars Loni Anderson. Geeeez how far has she fallen???Wednesday
Enterprise is on its last legs for me. I can't believe it has reached this point. The show was supposed to get back to the days of Wild West and Kirk type captains. Instead it continues to ram utopian garbage down your throat and Archer is hypocrite and wishy washy. Worst of all it has betrayed the mythos that it has built up through out the years and that is just wrong. Yet even that doesn't top the blantant pandering to the undersexed nerd crowd it did with the T'Pal gets horny episode. Jake 2.0 looks really bad. I will give it a watch only because it is at least a somewhat orginal concept and not just standard cop and lawyer and doctor fare.2003-2004 Season, Enterprise, Jake 2.0: UPN...
Thursday 05.15.2003
alice ttlg || 03:07 PM
And here is UPN's fall schedule! Second to last, only Fox left to go...
...there be spoilers below...
UPN is offering only one new hour long show and the rest is sitcoms except for Enterprise. Jake 2.0 is the new show, doesn't sound real promising tho, a technician at the NSA gets infected with nanites and becomes Superman! And he can talk to computers telepathically! The lead actor is from Felicity which I've never seen so I know nothing about him.
Mondays and Tuesdays is all sitcoms, Wednesdays is Enterprise and Jake 2.0, Thursdays is nothing (yes, I think wrestling is nothing :)) and Fridays is movies.
Enterprise has been slowly sinking all season long, it started off real strong, got my hopes up again but the last few months have just been getting worse and worse. So if Jake 2.0 is bad too, I may not be watching anything on UPN...
2003-2004 Season, CSI, CSI: Miami, Cold Case, Judging Amy, The District, The Handler, Without a Trace: CBS
Wednesday 05.14.2003
MattM || 08:56 PM
Click the Spoilers Link below for my thoughts on the upcoming season for CBS:
...there be spoilers below...
Monday
Leads off with three sitcoms that I don't get, don't like, and don't find funny Yes, Dear, Still Standing, and Everybody Loves Raymond (with that contract who can blame them!! It is then followed by the new sit com Two & a Half Men staring a load of really solid actors, Charlie Sheen, John Cryer, and Blythe Danner. That being said the concept is just so mundane and been there done that about 5,000 times. Just because you have great actors does not mean I want to the 10 million reincarnation of the same show. Lastly is the disappointing CSI:Miami. I really hope it pulls itself together in its second season but its on a short leash for me. If it continues to be as bad as it was in its first season I am going to stop watching after three episodes.Tuesday
Anchoring a very stable Tuesday with two shows that are geared to the other gender at 8 and 9 are Guardian and Judging Amy and since I am the wrong gender I think both shows suck. Leading off the night is the Jag spinoff NCIS or the gay police as we used to call them back in my Navy days. This organization will no doubtly be potrayed as heroic and wonderful when in fact its ruthless and often has no trouble killing someones career with little or no proof. Still it has two strong male leads in Harmon and Weatherly so even though it is a spin off of that even more horrible show JAG I will give it at least a one watch just to check it out.Wednesday
This night starts at 8 with King of Queens which I will always remember as the show that started with an all black family then was redone with an all white family. It is followed by yet another stinker of a show by the creators of Will & Grace (like thats some sort of great pedigree). It stars Judith Light one of the better actors on TV period but even that won't save this sinking Stones (sorry couldn't help that pun). Lastly the new David Kelly show, The Brotherhood of Poland, New Hampshire or from hereafter referred to as TBOP because I am not typing that stupid long ass title. TBOP is a clone of Picket Fences and has what is probably the one of the top casts on TV (at least on paper). Undoubtly TBOP will soar to great heights and so I will watch it but just as sure as I am of that it will undoubtly bottem out in either the second or third season.Thursday
Not a bunch to comment here since there is no new shows. CSI and Without A Trace are very good one-two punch and look forward to season two on both.Friday
This night might compete with ABC for worst night on TV. Staring with the new drama Joan of Arcadia about a teenager who sees and talks to God. And Agency got cancelled for this??????? I won't say anymore or I will throw a fit heretofore not seen since Joss Whedon walked out on the 100th Buffy celebration. It is followed by that most unrealistic show (including Fastlane) on TV, JAG. I hate that show because as bad as NCIS is the JAG core in the Navy is really amazing and the job they do is not done 1/10th the justice it deserves by this show. Lastly is The Handler. It has a great lead in Joe Pantoliano but the rest of the cast looks very shaky but still it has potential but its either going to be great or going to suck something awful.Saturday
The only network running a full slate on Saturdays and my show is no longer here. Leading off the night is Hack about a taxi cab driving cab fighter. Ok I think I would rather watch Joan of Arcadia then that. District is just about as bad as that with it is Craig Nelson who when properly reigned in is terrific but when let loose to run amock you get the things like Harry and the Hendersons.Sunday
Sunday has only one show on it and thats the new show Cold Case. I think this show could be really good if they delve in the character driven show side instead of just the standard fair of cop shows. That being said this is not what Jerry Bruckheimer produces. So I think it will be solid to good I think its just going to be another Without A Trace, CSI, CSI:Miami show but of those he has only done one really well and adding a fourth does not give me a whole lot of confidence.2003-2004 Season, CSI, CSI: Miami, Cold Case, Judging Amy, NCIS, The District, The Handler, Without a Trace: CBS' lineup
Wednesday 05.14.2003
alice ttlg || 07:30 PM
CBS put their fall lineup up today, the first network to offer some new shows that I'm actually interested in watching....
...there be spoilers below...
Sunday
First new one up is Cold Case on Sunday and it suddenly hit me where I knew that name from! There's a Canadian show by that name and the same premise (iirc), Peter Wingfield was on it for a season, I think and I watched it some, it was very Britishy tho and not very good I thought. This American version offers a not very well known cast and it's by Jerry Bruckheimer so it looks to be a sort of Without A Trace clone. This make four cop shows for Jerry Bruckheimer and Dick Wolf has four cop shows too, I'm not crazy about so many cop shows, give me some variety in themes! and even less crazy about eight cop shows from two producers, too much all the same all the time. Whatever happened to originality? Oops, I forgot that TPTB erased that word from their dictionaries. The remaining items on CBS on Sunday are 60 Minutes and movies.Monday
Here CBS is sticking to pretty much the same thing, sitcoms and CSI: Miami. There's one new sitcom but I won't bother to talk about it since it sounds atrocious. I stopped watching CSI: Miami months ago, too many bad episodes and not enough good ones, it's a very pale imitation of the original CSI.Tuesday
The Guardian and Judging Amy were renewed and still in their regular time slots, at 7pm, there's the Jag spinoff, NCIS and gah! I would have absolutely no interest in this show but I just noticed that Michael Weatherly from Dark Angel is in it! Eep! I might actually, um, er, watch an episode or two....it's a rerun for Mark Harmon, he already played a Navy criminal investigator, in the Presidio, with Sean Connery and Meg Ryan, he might not be toooooo bad, but we'll see.Wednesday
Here we have 60 Minutes II and two sitcoms, one new and also sounding atrocious and then at 9pm, we have one of the few new shows I'm looking forward to, The Brotherhood of Poland, New Hampshire. It's got quite a cast, Randy Quaid, Mare Winningham, Elizabeth McGovern and Ann Cusack. It's produced by David Kelley, looks like he's redoing his old Picket Fences show. I'll give it a whirl, Kelley's shows are good the first year or two and I liked Picket Fences. Plus it's NOT a cop show!Thursday
No changes here, Survivor at 7 (I don't watch reality shows), then CSI and Without A Trace at 8 and 9.Friday
Here we've got a ridiculous premise in Joan of Arcadia, a teenager who sees God in different forms each week, thanks much, I think I'll pass...JAG at 8 and then The Handler, Joe Pantoliano training impossibly young and pretty looking FBI agents, obviously nothing approaching reality here.Saturday
Nothing new here, just reshuffled shows, 48 Hours, Hack and The District. (Someone please tell me why Hack is still on the air??? Taxi driver as crime fighter, sheesh.)So, not too much here, except for the one new show I'm giving a green to, Brotherhood of Poland, New Hampshire.
[jerry adds] TBOP: If you do not like this show then you do not deserve to watch prime time tv. You see, we wait all season for an all-star cast and script...then it gets delivered; and, you know who you are; complain about the lack of creativity and want to run a genius like D. Kelly out of town. You just remember that when all that is left in prime time is the reality show line up... now thats original. Keep this show on the network and make it mandatory that a minimum IQ of 65 is required to view it....oh wait...there goes 75% of the national tv audience out the door to watch fear factor! (October 30, 2003 12:43 AM)
[bo adds] I came upon your website to find out cbs fall lineup 2004-2005, Boy was I surprised to see what you wrote about "HACK" I hope you get to see what a great show it truly is .Why?It's a show that you can watch with your family ,a show that has great actors, great writters and a great look about it. Yes I do think they can improve with a love interest thats why a third season is needed.I do hope "HACK" comes back. (May 9, 2004 09:47 AM)
[jo adds] I missed the last episode of The Handler....can somebody fill me in? (June 2, 2004 04:01 PM)
[alice ttlg adds] I never watched it so I haven't a clue and the show was cancelled so I'm not sure it matters anyway. If you go to TVTome (http://www.tvtome.com/Handler/guide.html ), they do have info about each ep there, including the last two unaired eps. (June 5, 2004 10:37 AM)
[Annette adds] I for one am very angry they cancelled Hack and The District. Every time a decent showed is started, it is yanked off the air! Why? Why? In the midst of all these vile, graphic and horrid shows, why can't we have a splash of decent material to watch??? (December 21, 2004 09:20 AM)

Took them all day, but ABC finally got their fall schedule up on their website and there is no joy in Mudville tonight...
...there be spoilers below...
Sunday
While my brother can't explain his high hopes for 10-8, I can't explain why I think this show will be bad! Something about it just seems off to me but I will probably watch at least a few eps since it's the only thing on at 7pm and it's on before Alias which I'll definitely be watching, it's one of the best shows on these days and I'm still amazed at how they manage to keep up the suspense and action after two years. The finale opened up all sorts of possibilities so I'm excited about seeing where they take the show now. I might even get sucked into watching The Practice again since it's back in its 9pm slot after Alias, at least we won't have Bobby Donnell preaching at Eugene Young anymore, assuming that what I've been told about Dylan McDermott leaving the show is true and personally, at this point, I think it might help the show improve greatly.Monday
Nothing to see here, move along, move along...Tuesday
Not interested in the sitcoms, too many other things to watch and most of them look pretty wretched. NYPD Blue....I am so heartily sick of the Connie/Andy/baby thing, my only hope is that the finale this year will mean the conclusion of that story line and if they don't focus on it next year and instead give the other cast members so air time, it might pick up again. But if the next season starts off with more of that crap, I'm outta there.Wednesday
Hmmm, ah, er, well...I don't watch reality shows so I've never seen The Bachelor (and I don't intend to start now), I watched My Wife and Kids for awhile but it got really stupid last fall and I quit plus there was nothing I liked after it so that left me with a blank half hour till the 8 pm shows. This It's All Relative looks horrendous, I guess they're going for the La Cage Aux Folles/Birdcage thing but I didn't much care for the movie either. Karen Sisco, the beauty of the movie was her attraction to a specific criminal, Geoge Clooney's character and they had wonderful chemistry, but changing that in this show to her being a dufus with any guy doesn't sound real good. I'll give a try tho, see if it's better than it sounds.Thursday
And here we have the first blatant attempt to capitalize on 9/11 and fears of terrorism, Threat Matrix. Ick. My brother is again hopeful and there are some good actors in it, Jamie Denton (Lyle in the Pretender) and Kelly Rutherford (The District, Melrose and The Kindred), and since Friends has been so atrocious this year and I never liked Scrubs, I'll give it a shot, something to watch until 8 pm when CSI is on. As for the rest of the night, don't watch reality shows and don't need more news shows.Friday
Sitcoms, Back to Kansas interests me, but it's on after George Lopez which I don't find funny at all and before that ugghhh, ick, gag me with a spoon, Hope & Faith show with Kelly Ripa who cannot act, not even as herself. Life with Bonnie I thought was terrible even tho I loved Bonnie Hunt in the movies she's done, the series is just bad and then there's more news. I doubt I'll be watching anything on ABC on Fridays, maybe I'll read a book till Boomtown on NBC at 9pm.Saturday
I ABSOLUTELY refuse to call it that! The show is Dragnet! It's a remake of the original Dragnet, there was NO L.A. in the name then and it's really stupid to change it now! WTF??? So in this blog, it will remain Dragnet, no L.A. crap. But geez did they move it to the death slot on Saturday night, not only Saturday night but 9pm on Saturday AND after Disney! What a lead-in! Sheesh. I hear from my brother that The Agency on CBS got cancelled, The District got renewed and also moved to 9pm and NBC is rumored to be putting Crossing Jordan at 9pm Saturday when/if it comes back at mid-season so we'll have Dragnet, District and Crossing Jordan all at 9pm, after various movies, looks to me like all three networks want those shows to die and go away. I will watch Dragnet tho and I will watch The District at least long enough to see how/if they replace Ella and where the show goes from there, but I'll probably give up on Crossing Jordan. I like it when they do their regular stuff and use all the cast, give them all some room for their own unique stories, but when they focus on Jordan's obsession with her mother, I get bored silly. I would love to see a spinoff with Woody tho, I liked the sorta pilot they did recently.So...pretty dismal so far, not much that looks very good, mostly mediocre to downright awful. Still waiting on CBS, UPN and Fox before I give my overall rating of the upcoming season.

Monday
Well nothing really to comment here until post football season.Tuesday
The only drama on the night is NYPD Blue which I hope someday to be caught up on to actually watch it on TV although according to my sister it seems to swimming with sharks now. Leading up to that are four sit-coms 8 Simple Rules (below average and don't watch), According To Jim (really below average), Less Then Perfect (really, really below average), and the newbie I'm With Her. The newbie is based on the real life experience of the head writer who married Brooke Shields and the wackiness ensues. I will say this looks like its probably going to be bad but it has some potential to it at least its not another family sit-com so I will give it a watch or two. The best part though is that Brooke Shields isn't in it but you know she will make a cameo if this show makes it.Wednesday
My Wife and Kids returns to its slot and is an ok sit-com but not one I watch. It is followed by a new entry It's All Relative an undoubtly cliche driven sit-com about a guy who meets a girl. Guy's parents are old school catholic and girls parents are gay men. I am sure the stereotypes will be dominate and be stupid and so this show deserves its huge giant red. The new drama entry at 9 is Karen Sisko the J-Lo Character spin off. I think if they just forget the movie it will be ok to good but somehow I get the feeling this could be a bomb.Thursday
Only one show on here and it's my one (saying my prayers and pleading) hope to date that might be a truely good show. Threat Matrix about an elite counter-terrorism group. The cast looks decent and the pedigree is there but I can't shake the feeling that it's going to bomb but I hope I hope that I am wrong.Friday
This might be the single worst block of television on all the networks combined. George Lopez returns for some unknown reason I guess because it's produced by Sandra "Overrated" Bullock as well as Life With Bonnie another one I can't figure why it's still around clearly was one of the worst sitcoms of the new sitcoms from last year. The two new shows look even worse than those two with Back To Kansas an out of place New Yorker in Kansas with his wife's family and Hope and Faith and the only person who I detest more then Whoopi is Kelly Ripa and considering her "acting talents" despite the fact she will be playing herself basically this will be bad bad bad.Saturday
L.A. Dragnet LA DRAGNET????? What the hell is up with that name change and this death slot of 9 pm on Saturdays. I like this show ok and its a decent L&O spin-off but the name change bugs me and this time slot means its not long for the world.Sunday
10-8 I get this strange good vibe off of but I can't give any reason about it. I also can't see how it can be good for more then one year. Its supposed to be about a rookie cop and his hazing by the veteran cops. Um ok but what happens in year 2? Does he get to haze someone? I don't know I can't justify why I think its going to be good but for some reason I think it just might. Alias returns and is one of the best hours on all of TV and then followed by the horrible Practice. I guess David Kelly got his wish on the return to its orginal time slot.2003-2004 Season, Charmed, Fearless, Smallville, Tarzan: WB

...there be spoilers below...
Monday
7th Heaven & Everwood (aka Gilmore Guys) Both these I do not watch 7th Heaven is an average Walton-esque Family Drama and Gilmore Guys errr Everwood I have zero interest in.Tuesday
Gilmore Girls & Fearless Gilmore Girls although I am sure its top notch for his genre and its target audience I am not part of that audience and not something I watch. Fearless on the other hand um it sure has name people on it in the producing/writing department so I will give it a watch just for the heck of it but I dunno this concept of the y generation special unit with a girl who has no fear seems rather bad but I will give it one shot besides knowing Tuesdays at 8 track record it will probably be really good just because networks are determined to see how many VCRs I can run at 8 pm on Tuesdays.Wednesday
Smallville and Angel Another surprisingly smart move by a network this pairing gives WB a dynamic combo that gives a great alternative to NBCs strong lineup and should draw decent ratings.Thursday
Sit Com part I Very typical WB lineup nothing to interesting or noteworthy here. The only new sitcom Run of the House looks just very very run of the mill.Friday
Sit Com part II Same as Thursday nothing special in the new shows Like Family and All about the Andersons and the old shows are ok but nothing worth watching.Sunday
Charmed and Tarzen & Jane Charmed with any luck I will actually be watching by season start and hopefully it will have gotten better but at last check it seems to be on a downward slide. Tarzen & Jane just looks dumb. I mean Tarzan protecting New York?? NEW YORK!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA oh man I think they would have been better keeping Black Sash.[Whitney adds] Hey everyone well I guess I'll just comment on a couple of shows coming up this fall then. Well first of all for the whole Fearless show coming on this fall...i'm actually very excited to see it come to wb!! I think the wb is doing a very swell job with shows this fall but the only problem is that they don't keep the shows on there long enough to see or enjoy them. Well we will see how things work out with Fearless this fall...but I gotta tell you all...you have to actually read the Fearless books by Francine Pascual and then you'll understand why I'm suprised its becoming a show-good series thats why. I mean the whole idea of it is based of the books mostly. Angel I'm hoping this year it will be a little more edgier because last year went on the shaky side I would say. Hey I still miss Dark Angel? Anyone else? oh well. Gilmore Girls has to pick up a little more too...and have Loralai Gilmore actually get her own life...and try atleast to find a life of her own and not her daughters. Its cute but sometimes a little pathetic. Lately I watch that show just for the guys. Hmm...7th heaven let me see well that show has reallly changed from before. I find it kind of slow and weird now days...how is it that show is now all about Lucy Camden and her wining self and boyfriend? And they make Simon the little bad boy? What is this the brady bunch gone wrong? I mean don't get me wrong I love all these shows but lets hope for the best this fall! I looking foward to every single new show thats coming out this fall on the wb!!! YAY. Tarzan...haha...kinda funny:D but cuuute. Hey i want to check out that show with Eliza Dushku-Tru Calling! Hmm...everwood that show really is strange...its gotta get more edgier! Lets see how long and how well all the shows do hopefully before it gets aired off the wb! They really have to start putting more good shows on days other than mondays through tuesdays though! most of time you find all these shows you like but they're all on the same night! see yah everyone ;) (August 23, 2003 05:03 AM)
[MattM adds] Well thank you for your comment but two problems with the show Fearless. The first one being from everything that I had read it was going to be very different from the books. That they had changed the character quite dramatically if they had stayed true to the books then I might be a little more pumped about this show. However it is all rather moot at this point since we don't even know if it will make it to air since it is no longer on the schedule and has been tabled for a mid season replacement. Which usually means that even if it makes it to air its going to be bad. Hope I am wrong on both counts but experience tells me otherwise. I likewise miss Dark Angel too and FOX as usual jumped the cancel gun way to early on it. I am not sure if third season could have been good but I had hoped they would have given it a shot. 7th Heaven comments I can't say much since its not really a show I watch. Tarzan looks pretty awful but I'll give it a look. Tru Calling I can't shake this feeling that its going to be a bomb. I really hope not I think Eliza Dushku is terrific but the vibe I get is not a good one. If you do want to check out a good new show I recommend Nip/Tuck on FX. My early front runner for best new show. (August 23, 2003 11:57 AM)
2003-2004 Season, Fearless, Smallville, Tarzan: WB lineup
Tuesday 05.13.2003
alice ttlg || 11:06 AM
WB has their fall schedule up on their site, really only two new shows, Fearless and Tarzan & Jane, not much to talk about here.
...there be spoilers below...
Monday stays the same with 7th Heaven (I think it's been renewed for two more seasons) and Everwood. So far that leaves me nothing to watch between 7th Heaven and Third Watch on NBC at 9.
Tuesday has one new show after Gilmore Girls, called Fearless, about a crime fighting girl who lacks the ability to feel fear. Doesn't sound promising, although it's a fairly decent cast.
Wednesday is Smallville and Angel, a great lineup, I'll be sure to be glued to the TV every Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm!
Thursday and Friday is all sitcoms, I'll skip that, thank you and Saturday is local programming.
Sunday is the other new show, after Charmed, there's Tarzan & Jane. Looks like pure fluffy trash, but I'll probably give a try since there's nothing else at 8pm on Sundays for me. Mitch Pileggi is in it, he was Skinner in the X-Files, doesn't say what character he plays, maybe Tarzan's relative?
For mid-season replacements, they have the Gilmore Girls spin-off listed along with One Tree Hill, about two half brothers, one living on the wrong side of the tracks and one on the right side, several sitcoms and three reality shows.
[SiStaH wHiT adds] As for mondays-with 7th heaven and Everwood. Those two shows are moving kinda slow I guess. The show is so melo-dramatic seriously. Its all about Lucy nows days and her husband who can't act at all anyone else notice that? What happened to the days the show was about everyone but her? Like Mary and matt and everything else? And now they Simon the little bad trauma boy over there? Whats up with that? Tuesdays will be having either Fearless or One tree hill and I'm definitely glued to the tv on that nite:D I'm pretty excited for both of those shows. I think Chad Micheal Murray out of one tree hill totally rocks! Fearless I'm glad to see it actually become a real show. If any of you guys actually read the book series you'll actually feel like you're watching a tv show while reading it believe and you'll sometimes wish that you were watching it instead. So hopefully it has good ratings. I like the cast though! Hope it stays on WB. Angel lets hope it gets jucier and interesting this fall!!! Sundays are always interesting nights of lineups for shows. I've always loved Charmed but last years season wasn't as well as I expected but hey it won't keep me from watching it though! I'm going to have to actually watch this so called tarzan this fall- see how that actually is...i mean I don't know...the guy is cute and all...but the whole story behind it seems a bit strange. Okays then see yah laters everyone!! Email me if you peeps wanna talk about some ratings or just talk bout shows like the professionals. :D (August 23, 2003 05:16 AM)
2003-2004 Season: NBC Humor
Tuesday 05.13.2003
MattM || 09:31 AM
Jeff Zucker has gone record twice now saying that cancelling Watching Elle was the toughest call to make and that he felt bad......um ok Jeff I know she has pictures of you and your lover you don't want your wife to see but REALLY NOW THE SHOW SUCKED!!!! I am so sick of the Seinfield gang as they attempt to ram one of thier series down our throats while good shows like Mister Sterling get ZERO chance.
In addition to that I also loved the spin he put on putting Tracy Morgan's sitcom as a midseason order calling it his strongest sitcom that would be best served as a midseason replacement uh huh Jeff sure whatever you say. Thats sort of akin to NFL GM saying the guy he got in the last pick of the second round was really a first rounder.
Lastly in the you know the show is in trouble department....Whoopi has been told to remake itself because it needs to be edgier and oh yea she play's a chain smoking innkeeper.......oh man the show won't be funny but the concept is so bad right now it is funny just for that.
2003-2004 Season, Boomtown, Crossing Jordan, ER, Ed, Frasier, Friends, Happy Family, Judging Amy, Las Vegas, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: SVU, Lyon's Den, Third Watch: NBC's schedule...

Eeeesh. ALL the descriptions on the NBC site for the new shows are so dripping with marketing-speak, they are truly horrendous! Badly written, overblown and thoroughly sensationalized. Ack.
See the show grid for the NBC Fall Preview and click on the spoiler link below to read the rest of my comments.
...there be spoilers below...
Sunday
Hmmm, looks like I may not be watching NBC at all on Sundays, I never watched American Dreams (useless glamorized nostalgia), L&O: CI was good sometimes but usually bad more than good and so uneven, I got tired of wasting time watching it hoping it would be good. And Lyon's Den sounds so unbelievable and soap-opera-ish, in spite of a few good people in the cast, it hardly seems worth watching. Matt Craven is good, I first saw him years ago in High Incident, a terrific cop drama with a great cast that got cancelled after one season. Frances Fisher, I've seen her in other things, can't recall what right now but I think she's good too. But Rob Lowe's character....eesh. Yeah sure, the managing partner dies and they decide to pick a young guy running their street law clinic to bump all the way up to managing partner overnight??? Why don't they throw in a bridge for sale while they're at it?Monday
Fear Factor, I don't watch reality shows. 'nuff said.Tuesday
Whoopi, Happy Family, again the descriptions are really badly written, but I like Whoopi, if they don't overdo the one-liners, it could be good and John Larroquette and Christine Barranski sound like a good match, they could really make the show good, but the kids sound atrocious. I'll give them both a chance since I'm taping Frasier at 8pm anyway. I'll skip Good Morning, Miami tho just like I did when it was on Thursdays too, I've never cared for Heather Locklear in comedic roles. L&O:SVU at 9pm, hmmm. So now I'll have three mediocre shows to watch at 9pm on Tuesdays, Judging Amy, NYPD Blue and SVU. I'm about to stop watching NYPD Blue tho because they've totally massacred Connie's character, done a complete 180 on her this season, taken her from being a strong female cop, able to hold her own in the squad to this wimpy nagging thing with a father fixation for Andy, the whole Andy/Connie/baby plot line just makes me gag. Judging Amy is still good tho, I think I'll skip both SVU and Blue and just watch Amy.Wednesday
Er, didn't NBC move Ed to Fridays? Why are they moving it back? Just couldn't find anything better to put there??? West Wing could really start sucking next year with Aaron Sorkin and Tommy Schlamme leaving, but I'll keep watching and see how it goes. I dropped L&O ages ago, they stopped doing all the stuff that made it so good the first six or seven years.Thursday
Friends, Scrubs, Will & Grace, Coupling, the last one sounds terrible and I have no interest in it but I think it will do fantastic, it'll fit right in with the other shows and get good ratings. But I never liked Scrubs and Will & Grace went to hell in a handbasket two seasons ago. Friends has been pretty bad this year, I guess I'll stick it out thru their last year but I don't have any expectation that it'll improve. ER was pretty bad too this last year, it's been renewed for two more years, I dunno, maybe it's time to start watching CSI and Without a Trace instead of taping them.Friday
Miss Match could actually be pretty good, the plot is reminiscent of Clueless and if they do it right, it could work. And there's nothing else to watch on Fridays (I want my John Doe!) while waiting for Boomtown in L&O: SVU's old time slot.Saturday
Nothing but movies here, but the rumor is that Crossing Jordan will go here at 9pm when it returns mid-season, that's the kiss of death for it. And what happened to the spin-off for Woody?It's interesting to note that NBC only has six new shows, they're keeping most stuff, I suspect all the other networks will have more new shows than NBC. Overall, best shows on NBC are Boomtown and, and...well, Boomtown. West Wing, Third Watch and ER are iffy but the sitcom lineup on Tuesdays could be good.
[MattM adds] Forgot to comment on Las Vegas and Third Watch there but did comment on Fear Factor coming back for its third season hmmm interesting should I take this as a slight to Third Watch and Las Vegas? Also your right what did happen to the Crossing Jordan spin off???? Man it must have stunk BAD to not even get a nod either that or they plan on putting both on Saturday nights in mid season HAHAHA (May 12, 2003 11:23 PM)
[ValB adds] What the heck happened to Kingpin? It really was must see TV for me! (May 14, 2003 10:36 AM)
[MattM adds] Well either its a mid season replacement or its gone completly. I tend to think its gone because I haven't word one about it. (May 14, 2003 10:59 AM)
[hammerdown415 adds] I love Crossing Jordan and I was looking into the same field of work. I hate that they took it off of the air. But Jordan Cavanaugh is pregnant in real life and I would want some time off to stay home and be with my newborn. I am just glad that it will return. Maybe one of these lame new shows will hit bottom and it will be returned to the weeknight schedule. (October 14, 2003 08:31 PM)
[LUCY adds] While I like Law and Order SVU I beieve it could be better if they stick to the format of the show, SVU means Special Victims Unit about sexually based crimes and sometimes some of the stories do not have a sex crime in them, also I believe it could be better if they get rid of the new ADA Casey Novak, she is as bad as the one on the regular Law and Order (March 10, 2004 03:40 PM)
[Jim Smith adds] I really enjoyed Lyon's Den. Too bad they did not give it the time to develop. (July 14, 2004 08:15 PM)
