Friday Night Lights: Pilot, 10/3/06

Monday 10.09.2006

This appears to be very true to the book and the movie. But unfortunately that doesn't make compelling, interesting weekly TV watching. In fact, it's very grim and depressing weekly TV watching. The book encompassed not just the phenomenon of high school football mania but also the towns of Odessa and Midland and the Texas oil boom and bust history which made it a very good book. The movie mostly left out the background of the towns and the oil patch and focused on the phenomenon of high school football mania so it lost about half the stuff that made the book good. The TV series appears to be sticking to that, focusing on just the stress and tension and pressure on the coach and the team along with imitation Texas accents and cute sayings.

Not my cup of tea so I'm outta here.
