This show, otoh, is terrific. It's got all the good stuff, a good sense of humor, great characters - J. K. Simmons is terrific - it's amazing how many dramatically different characters he can play so convincingly. Kyra Sedgewick is brilliant, she plays everything beautifully and handles mouthfuls of dialogue with easy aplomb. The by-fits-and-starts romance with Fritz have been well done, fitting in with the character's quirkiness and eccentricity. It's been a joy to watch all summer.

Wow. TNT produces an original series that's actually good. Good cast, good characters, decent plot.
When I first heard the southern accent come out of Kyra Sedgwick's mouth, I almost groaned, usually a southern character gets done badly. But she's smart and good at it and while she's tough, she's also human and vulnerable. She's not perfect, I like that. The other characters are a good mix, Gabriel is not just a stereotypical young black cop but then there's Provenza who is the stereotypical prejudiced old-time cop ("you'd have to go to sensitivity training" "again?" LOL!) and there's a couple others on the team but these are two standouts in the first episode. And J. K. Simmons is wonderful, he provides an excellent anchor for the show, he can stand up to Sedgwick in acting chops and they did an great job with bringing out their past together without shoving it in our face.
I'm stunned, TNT has flopped so badly in the past when they've tried to do original series, this is rather amazing, if they continue what they've started in the pilot, they just might give FX a run for their money.
